About Kibera

Brief history about Kibera

The word Kibera originated from a Nubian word ‘Kibra’ which means forest or jungle. The Nubians, being the first occupants of the area, have been living there since the Second World War, after they were allocated land by the British colonial government.

After the upgrading of Soweto in South Africa, Kibera has become the largest slum in Africa and the second largest in the world after Mumbai in India. It occupies an estimated area of 12 km2 and with a population of over 1 million people.

Life in Kibera is generally characterized by extreme poverty, with many people surviving with less than a dollar a day.

Special activities in the Kibera slums include visiting Hope and Shine Kibera Centre. Here travelers will be treated to fun times with kids, teach and take part in our school activities.

Pick-up and drop-off are pre-arranged at the time of booking. Travelers are therefore advised to provide the name of their hotel of residence.

We specializes in private tours of Kibera slums. We have razor sharp knowledge of the area and it's people.

we strive to make every tour a memorable one. It a joy to watch our visitors put smiles on kids faces.
